Why use ASTM D1922 for testing packaging materials?
ASTM D1922 is a test method listed in ISO 11607 (Annex B) that is used to demonstrate compliance for packaging materials and preformed sterile barrier systems. Simply put, ASTM D1922 is the standard test method for tearing strength of plastic film. Performing a tear test can help predict how the packaging will respond to age intervals or sterilization methods, that may have adverse effects on the packaging material.
What a tear test can do:
- Measure force to propagate a tear.
- Fast strain rate (300-1800″/min) – Comparable to strain rates found in actual packaging service.
- Limited range of testable strengths up to 6400g – Also applicable to fabrics such as Tyvek®
